What Should I do When I Grow Up ?

Most teenagers asks themselves what they should do when they grow up? But what they really should be asking themselves is what they want to do when they grow up. There are many people who believe that they should do something that will bring them lots of money. But this thought may be misleading, because without real happiness money is of no use. Of course I'm not saying that you should just stay home, give up your ambitions and receive a check from the government to help sustain you while you let yourself get lazy and bored. I'm suggesting that you should figure out what really drives you, motivates you and puts a spark in your eye.

Once you've found what makes you want to wake up in the morning, whether it's roller-blading, painting your toenails, writing, drawing, dancing, singing, designing programs, designing clothes or houses, you will be on the right path to success. There are countless ways in which you can be financially stable even quite successful if you do what you love to do. You don't need to think about the paycheck before you pick your career. As long as you are extremely passionate about what you will do in your future, then getting up in the morning and making the first steps required to achieve your goals and dreams will come easily. If you still don't believe me when I say that you can be successful at whatever you do as long as it's something that you love? Read "Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow" by Marsha Sinetar. You can buy the book at amazon.

Another question you might have is "how am I supposed to know what I want to do for the rest of my life when I'm still in high school?". Well it's true that the decision you make in high school will affect what your plans will be in the future. But don't put so much pressure about this one decision, because it does not mean that your future is set in stone and that you will never be able to do any type of work other than the major you pick or the trade school you go to. This may have been the case in the past, but in the last years or so research has shown that people are more likely to change their careers and type of jobs. Some even changes job every three years! Your grandparents probably only had one job, with a stable pension plan at the end of their career and into retirement. But companies have changed and employers and employees have change a lot over the years. People like to try different things, push their boundaries and meet new people. You can do the same.

So try not to stress out about this decision of which school to go to after you graduation, which program to choose, which field to study, etc. Just take a deep breath, think about how you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years and go with what makes you happy.
