How to Get Along With Your Mom

Mother Daughter Relationships explained

Getting along with your mother may or may not be a problem for you. Some mother daughter relationships are stronger than others. But it's quite obvious that one day or another you and your mother will have a fight and one or both of you will be hurt or angry. It happens and it's normal, but here is how to avoid it as much as possible or at least to make it as painless as possible.

First of all, always have respect for your mother no matter what you are discussing or what you are doing. Your mom might be wrong about what the coolest clothes are this season, but she is still the person who gave birth to you and sacrificed her waistline to give you life. If you always keep in mind that your mom is only looking out for you and for herself, you will be able to better understand her. It's hard to understand an adult's point of view sometimes because you just haven't been where they have and done all of the things that they have. Your mom has plenty of experience with all of the things you are about to face, no matter how different you think they are. So don't be afraid to ask your mother for some teen advice, she will be more than happy to share her experiences.

If your mother and yourself are about to go into an argument or disagree on a certain topic, just make sure she understands that you're not attacking her, but only her opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and to be able to take sides with or against others' opinions too. If your mother takes your words or opinions too seriously, tell her that you respect her advice and opinions, but that you don't believe the same things that she does. Of course you should consider what your mom advises, but if you do still disagree just tell her openly without making a big fuss about it. Acting like an adult and replying maturely to your mother's words will make your mother respect you even more and will probably avoid more future disputes.

So now that you know how to deal with your mom when it comes to fights, how can you avoid them? Your bound to do something that your mom disapproves of, it's only natural. But find out why your mom doesn't want you doing certain things and you'll be able to convince her why you should or why you shouldn't be punished for them. For example, if your mom doesn't like it when you stay out past curfew, she might be worried that bad things could happen to you and that you might be in danger. Convince her that you are safe with friends by introducing her to your friends and their parents. That way she will know that you're not running off with some random guy and putting yourself into trouble.

To sum up, just try to see things from your mom's perspective and dealing with her will be much easier. I'm not saying that you need to believe and abide every word she says, but just consider her opinions and respect her wishes as much as possible and things will go smoothly.
